High-Resolution Macro 3D Scanning in Sydney, NSW At first glance, scanning a tiny part might sound straightforward, but it can be one of the most challenging types of 3D scanning. Small parts often contain fine details that are difficult to measure accurately using traditional methods, making them ideal candidates for high-resolution 3D scanning.
A recent project involved a client who needed copies of a tiny part. There were no CAD files or engineering drawings available, so the original component became the starting point for the entire process. Using our high-resolution Structured Light Scanning (SLS) system fitted with specialised macro optics, we captured the geometry of the part, created a clean digital mesh and produced accurate resin replicas using professional 3D printing.
The Project
The client supplied the original part and required several identical copies. Because of the size of the component, along with its fine features and complex geometry, measuring it by hand would have been slow and unlikely to achieve the level of accuracy required. Instead, we used our macro scanning system, which is designed specifically for capturing small objects in high detail.
Step 1: Preparing the Part
Before scanning, the part was inspected and prepared to ensure the best possible result. Choosing the correct scanning equipment is particularly important for small objects. While larger scanners are well suited to bigger components, they often cannot capture the level of detail needed for miniature parts. Our macro Structured Light Scanning system allows us to record fine features while maintaining excellent dimensional accuracy.
Step 2: Capturing the Scan
The part was scanned from multiple angles using our Structured Light Scanning (SLS) system. Capturing the object from different positions ensures that all visible surfaces are recorded and reduces the chance of missing small features or hidden areas. Once all scans were completed, they were aligned and merged into a single high-resolution 3D mesh. The finished scan accurately captured the shape and detail of the original part, providing a solid foundation for manufacturing.
Step 3: Processing the Mesh and Printing the Parts
After scanning, the mesh was processed to remove unwanted data and prepare it for manufacturing. The completed mesh was then used to produce replica parts using a professional resin 3D printer. Resin printing is particularly well suited to small components because it can reproduce fine details and smooth surfaces with a high level of accuracy. The printed parts closely matched the original and required very little post-processing before they were ready for the client.
Step 4: Supplying the Finished Parts
Once the printed parts had been inspected, they were supplied to the client. By combining high-resolution 3D scanning with resin 3D printing, we were able to reproduce a tiny part without the need for original CAD files or technical drawings. This approach is ideal for replacing obsolete parts, producing prototypes or manufacturing low-volume components.
