Creating a replacement 3D Printer Part Sydney, NSW A damaged 3D printer can become difficult to repair when replacement parts are no longer available or the original components are not easily sourced. In this project, 3D scanning and CAD modelling were used to recreate replacement parts and return a damaged printer to working condition.

The Project

The 3D printer had been damaged and was no longer usable. Some of the required replacement components were difficult to obtain, making it impractical to simply order new parts. Rather than replacing the entire printer, the existing components were used as references to recreate the required geometry.

Step 1: 3D Scanning the Original Parts

A 3D scanner was used to capture the geometry of the relevant components. The scan provided a detailed digital reference of the original parts, including their shape, mounting points and other important features.

Step 2: Creating the CAD Models

The scan data was then used to create CAD models of the replacement parts. The geometry was reconstructed and adjusted where necessary to ensure the new components would fit correctly with the existing printer. Using CAD rather than printing directly from the raw scan also allowed the parts to be edited and refined before manufacturing.

Step 3: 3D Printing the Replacement Parts

Once the CAD models were completed, the replacement components were 3D printed. The printed parts were checked against the original components and the printer to ensure that the required dimensions and mounting features were correct.

Step 5: Bringing the Printer Back Into Service

The replacement parts allowed the damaged printer to be repaired rather than discarded. This project demonstrates how 3D scanning, reverse engineering, CAD modelling and 3D printing can be combined to recreate replacement components when original parts are unavailable. This approach can also be applied to many other machines, appliances, tools and mechanical components where replacement parts are discontinued, difficult to source or no longer manufactured.
