In this project, a metal bracket was 3D scanned and reverse engineered to produce a CAD model suitable for CNC machining.

The Project

The client supplied an existing metal bracket that needed to be digitally reproduced. The original component was used as the reference for capturing the geometry and determining the dimensions required for the new CAD model. The goal was not simply to create a visual copy of the bracket, but to produce a clean, editable CAD model that could be used for CNC manufacturing.

Step 1: 3D Scanning the Metal Bracket

The bracket was prepared and scanned using laser 3D scanning technology. The scanner captured the shape of the component, including its mounting holes, edges, curves and other important features. The resulting scan provided a detailed geometric reference for the reverse engineering process.

Step 2: From 3D Scan to CAD

After scanning, the captured data was processed and cleaned before being used to reconstruct the bracket in CAD. Rather than using the raw triangular scan mesh directly for manufacturing, the important geometry was rebuilt using proper CAD features and mathematically defined surfaces. This allows the model to be accurately edited and provides better control over dimensions and manufacturing features.

Step 3: Creating a CNC-Ready Model

The final CAD model was prepared with CNC machining in mind. Critical dimensions, hole locations, profiles and mounting features were checked to ensure the geometry represented the original component accurately. A properly constructed CAD model provides a suitable starting point for CAM programming and CNC machining, allowing toolpaths to be generated from controlled engineering geometry rather than an unprocessed scan mesh.

Step 5: The Result

The completed CAD model provided the client with a digital representation of the existing metal bracket that could be used for CNC manufacturing and future modifications. This type of 3D scanning and reverse engineering is particularly useful when an existing component needs to be reproduced but the original engineering drawings or CAD files are unavailable.
