On-Site 3D Scanning and Reverse Engineering Grain Mill Pipe Segments

Project Overview: 3D Scanning on-site in industrial setting, (pipework must be scanned in place) and Create a CAD model to generate a flat sheet layout for laser CNC cutting.
Services Provided: 3D Scanning on-site, CAD Modelling.
Project Outcome: Delivering the client with a clean, editable 3D CAD model suitable for use in cnc manufacturing.
Why OML3D: Our advanced 3D scanning equipment and reverse engineering expertise enabled us to achieve the accuracy and detail required for the project.
On-Site 3D Scanning and Reverse Engineering Grain Mill Pipe Segments Industrial facilities often rely on pipework and other components that operate continuously for long periods of time. When these components begin to deteriorate, replacing them can be challenging, particularly when unexpected downtime can have a significant impact on production and quickly accumulate costs. In this project, on-site 3D scanning was used to capture deteriorated pipework inside a grain mill facility and create the CAD data required to manufacture accurate replacement sections without taking the existing system out of service for an extended period.
The Project
We were contacted by Daniel Forazio from All State Engineering Group Pty Ltd to carry out an on-site 3D scanning project at Allied Pinnacle’s grain mill facility. The existing pipework used for transporting grain and flour had deteriorated after years of operation, with sections developing holes and significant wear. Replacement pipework needed to be manufactured to match the existing installation as accurately as possible.
Step 1: Site Inspection and Project Preparation
Before the scanning work commenced, an initial site visit was carried out to inspect the installation and understand the requirements of the project. The existing pipework, access conditions, working environment and surrounding equipment were assessed.
Step 2: On-Site 3D Scanning of Elevated Pipework
The pipework was elevated approximately four meters above the ground, making conventional measurement and manual measuring difficult. A 3D tracking scanner was used to capture the existing pipework and surrounding geometry directly in position.
Step 3: Processing the 3D Scan Data
Once the scanning was completed, the captured data was processed and assembled into a detailed 3D mesh.
Step 4: Creating the CAD Model
The processed 3D scan was then used as the reference for creating a CAD model of the existing pipework.

Step 5: Creating DWG Files for CNC Laser Cutting and Assembly Drawings
Once the CAD model was completed, the required geometry was used to generate DWG files for CNC laser cutting.
The Results
The project was successfully completed, providing Daniel with the digital information required to manufacture the replacement pipework.
